Every year on the first Monday in September, people celebrate Labor Day. Labor Day falls on Monday, September 2, in 2024.

Although a bill honoring Labor Day was initially introduced in New York, it was Oregon that passed a legislation recognizing the holiday on February 21, 1887

Who Founded Labor Day?

Although it's not totally obvious, two workers have a strong case to be named the Founders of Labor Day.

According to the Central Labor Union's plans, the first Labor Day holiday was observed on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City.

A Just one year later, on September 5, 1883, the Central Labor Union celebrated Labor Day for the second time.

In American cities and towns, Labor Day is still observed with parades, barbecues, picnics, fireworks, and other public events, particularly throughout the extended Labor Day weekend.
