The use of AMOLED displays is increasing every year, whether it is smartphones, tablets, or laptops; all of them are now shifting to AMOLED displays. In 2024, more than 840 million units have already been sold, which is remarkable, and compared to the previous year, it shows 25% growth according to TrendForce. Leading smartphone makers are expected to use AMOLED technology more and more in 2025, with shipments expected to reach 870 million units, a YoY rise of 3.2%.
Korea is the manufacturer of AMOLED displays, but China has recently begun producing them as well, which has affected Korea’s shipments, which are progressively decreasing yearly. Furthermore, these Chinese businesses have been collaborating with smartphone manufacturers, which has resulted in a significant rise in the percentage of smartphones using AMOLED panels—from 51% in 2023 to 56.9% in 2024. According to TrendForce, this penetration rate might increase by 2% to 3% annually and reach 68% by 2028, making AMOLED panels the industry norm for smartphone displays.
The latest smartphone that has been releasing in India, especially AMOLED display phones, uses a display that has been manufactured by BOE, which is a Chinese supplier for AMOLED display. With estimates predicting shipments may reach over 130 million units this year, BOE has emerged as the leading provider of AMOLED display in China. Wang Dongsheng established Beijing Oriental Electronics Group Co., Ltd. in April 1993.
Beijing Oriental Electronics changed its name to BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. in 2001. For US$22.5 million, BOE purchased the STN-LCD and OLED divisions of SK Hynix. extra A shares were issued on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. For US$380 million in 2003, BOE purchased the Hydis flat-panel display division of SK Hynix.

The Korean panel manufacturers generally supply stiff AMOLED panels in small quantities to Apple and Samsung, with fewer and fewer panels going to other brands each year.
Strong relationships with regional smartphone manufacturers have allowed BOE to gradually increase its exports to Apple. The company is also preparing for mass production as scheduled, having passed the validation procedure for the forthcoming iPhone 16 series in 2024. This accomplishment shows that, after years of development, BOE’s technology and products are gradually gaining traction with well-known global companies like Apple, which may pave the way for more integration into Apple’s next offerings.
According to TrendForce, there is a rapid expansion in the number of AMOLED smartphone panel producers. As a result of strong sales of Huawei’s most recent models in 2024, Visionox is anticipated to ship 80 million devices. In addition, TIANMA and CSOT have started increasing their shipments of AMOLED smartphone panels this year, and there’s a good chance they’ll surpass their previous highs.
In 2024, it is projected that shipments of AMOLED smartphone panels worldwide will be made up of 47.9% Chinese manufacturers. Their total exports are expected to surpass those of their Korean competitors by 2025, resulting in a projected 50.2% worldwide market share.
