Recently, OpenAI ChatGPT introduced a search function that will directly compete with Google, the industry leader for almost ten years. Will the ChatGPT search engine overtake Google as the most popular search engine?
There has been speculation for a long time that OpenAI will launch SearchGPT for users; now finally, OpenAI is taking on Google and Microsoft Bing, though OpenAI’s 49% stake is held by Microsoft, which invested $13 billion. The new search feature is using the GPT-4o model and is a more advanced version of the SearchGPT prototype, revealed by the company.
According to the company, the update allows users to get “fast, timely answers” along with connections to pertinent online resources, which was previously necessary when using a standard search engine. By default, the ChatGPT Search function is activated based on the user’s request. The new online search button, which appears next to the attachment icon, may also be clicked to manually activate the search feature.

The ChatGPT search engine also includes links to original resources like blogs, news articles, websites, etc. A comprehensive list of citations supporting the response is now displayed to visitors when they click the sources button, which also launches a full-fledged sidebar. OpenAI says SeachGPT shares โdissociated search queriesโ with third-party search engine providers like Microsoft Bing to provide relevant responses to users. It also shares IP addresses with third-party search engine providers to get the right information to users. Web search is included into ChatGPT’s current UI rather than operating as a stand-alone product. Finally taking on Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT’s online search aims to bridge the gap between the two companies.
How to start using ChatGPT Search engine ?
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Search is first making its ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers available, with business and educational clients receiving access in the “coming weeks.” Over the next few months, the new functionality will be made available to ChatGPT customers who are currently using the service for free. The desktop, mobile, and online versions of the ChatGPT app will all support the new functionality.
ChatGPT Search engine take on other Search providers
Earlier OpenAI ChatGPT search team lead by Adam Fry showcases demo of ChatGPT search by Searching Apple Stock , in return it displayed almost everything, interactive stock graph, earning information and news articles with citations linking to original sources. Additionally, readers may browse through a list of relevant websites in the sources sidebar. Another example was when Fry looked for Italian restaurants in San Francisco, and the result was an interactive map with suggested eateries marked with dropped pins. Fry used follow-up questions to refine the results in both cases, such as identifying eateries that are “more casual and neighborhood-y.”
The search feature will be available to all platforms like iOS, android, macOS, and windows. This ChatGPT search is a prototype and only limited users were allowed.
One obvious reason a user could pick ChatGPT over Google Search is that there aren’t any sponsored inquiries or advertisements cluttered at the top. According to Fry, there are presently “no plans” to advertise in ChatGPT, despite the fact that Google profits greatly from search result advertising. It is unclear how OpenAI will pay for AI-powered search for free users, since it is still more costly to run than conventional search. Free users will be subject to “some limitations on how often they can use our latest search models,” according to Felix.
Lawsuits are also being filed against many AI search providers. The AI-powered search firm Perplexity has been sued by News Corp. and The New York Times, which claim that it has engaged in “massive freeriding” and “grand scale” copyright breaches. For allegedly utilizing the media company’s content to train its massive language models, OpenAI has also been sued by the New York Times. OpenAI said they will not use ads, then the question is, how will they finance ChatGPT? And what about the copyright issue? Well, in my opinion, using ads will be a great idea. In this way, both parties can earn money. If ChatGPT uses any news article for information, then ChatGPT should give a share of money to the news website just like YouTube does with copyright videos.
