Google has now started disabling the original uBlock Origin ad blocker for Chrome users, and other extensions are no longer supported because Chrome is migrating to new extension specifications, i.e., Manifest V3. According to reports, Google is now aiming to improve its privacy and security, but it has eliminated a feature that was necessary for some ad-blocking extensions to function; Mozilla is unable to accept this compromise for its own Firefox browser.
Some users noticed and reported on Reddit and X that Google is removing outdated extensions. If you are a Google Chrome user, then a notification might pop up underneath the extension section on the browser and encourage users to remove the impacted add-on, stating that it is “no longer supported” and has been disabled. Two buttons help users manage or rapidly remove their add-ons.
Although Google’s uBlock Origin phaseout on Chromium-based browsers started in October, it has just recently begun to affect more people. Additionally, Bleeping Computer has reported that staff members’ machines are turning off extensions.
These changes are coming because Google is moving away from the old Manifest V2 specification. Support for any extension that hasn’t or can’t upgrade to Manifest V3 is being discontinued, not only for uBlock Origin. Due to Manifest V3’s limitations on ad blocking, customers of uBlock Origin can switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which has less filtering power than its predecessor.

Users don’t need to worry, as Google Chrome won’t be the only one affected by the latest Manifest V3 rollout. Other browsers like Microsoft Edge are also losing V2 Specification, and Brave claims that when all Manifest V2 products are taken down from the Chrome Web Store, it will only be able to provide “limited” assistance. However, Mozilla claims that Firefox will keep supporting both extension protocols, possibly providing uBlock Origin customers with an alternative browser to switch to.
