For the longest time, Apple has been utilizing Sony’s camera sensor. Rumors have recently begun to circulate, nevertheless, suggesting that this might soon change. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, predicted last year that the Sony camera sensor layout would alter with the arrival of the iPhone 18, which is scheduled for 2026. This report is now supported by a new leak. According to the most current source, Samsung is working with Apple to build a three-layer stacked camera sensor that should improve the functionality of future iPhone cameras.

On X, the leaker, @Jukanlosreve, stated that Samsung will remove the Sony camera sensors. According to him, Samsung is now developing a three-layer stacked image sensor for Apple. According to reports, Samsung plans to put its CPU against the sensor in a three-layer arrangement. The term “PD-TR-Logic configuration” is used, it refers to the Photodiode layer (PD), Transfer layer (TR), and Logic layer.
The Transfer layer, which is said to be new in Samsung’s sensor, is in charge of lowering noise, while the Photodiode layer first collects light. Lastly, the iPhone’s computational photography is managed by the Logic layer.
“As early as 2026, Samsung is anticipated to start shipping 1/2.6-inch 48MP ultra-wide CMOS image sensors (CIS) to Apple for iPhones, ending Sony’s long-standing monopoly on CIS supply to Apple,” he continued. Samsung has set up a specialized staff to assist Apple in achieving this.
