Apple legend Jony Ive is working with Open AI and is rumored to bring a new ChatGPT AI device that might replace smartphones. Sam Altman confirmed that they are working on an AI device in an interview with a Korean outlet Elec.
In the same interview, the CEO clarified that “AI will require a fundamental change in the way we interact with computers.” “Voice will become the user interface medium,” he continued. To put it another way, it appears that voice commands will be a major selling point for this new AI gadget.
Jony Ive confirmed that they are working on the ChatGPT AI device, a lot of reports suggest they want to make an iPhone of AI. It doesn’t have to be a gadget that looks like a smartphone. We could be considering smart glasses like ChatGPT or something else entirely.
What kind of hardware might this be?
We have already seen Voice-driven AI gadgets and most of them don’t make sense for eg. Humane AI pin and Rabbit R1. Both of these products are voice-control with tiny screens, the only problem is that rather than a device they should have made an app for Android or iOS that would make sense.
Additionally, smart glasses have lately returned to popularity. At CES 2025, we saw a ton of new smart glasses that used ChatGPT. However, the Ray-Ban Meta range is the most successful product in this area. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently revealed that the company has sold over a million of these glasses, which employ its own AI algorithms.
However, there’s no need to guess that the first ChatGPT hardware will take on mobile devices. OpenAI wants its ChatGPT technology to “replace smartphones,” Sam Altman finally stated.
Open AI: ChatGPT AI device
Altman said in an interview with The Elec that Open AI is developing its silicon chip for its use in AI devices. Sam Altman also said that this will take several years and is not going to be released anytime soon, this means the first commercial Open AI gadget will not be released anytime soon.
These most recent facts also follow Altman’s statement to Nikkei Asia that he believed OpenAI and Jony Ive may collaborate on the AI gadget. But last year, Ive himself disclosed in a piece in the New York Times that he was already collaborating with the AI business on new technology. The disclosure from the Apple icon came after early speculation in April that the two were developing an AI gadget that didn’t resemble a phone.
