OnePlus Open 2 will not launch in 2025

The OnePlus Open was released in 2023, and it was a huge success. OnePlus Open beats other foldable phones in terms of features, but sadly, the OnePlus Open 2 won’t be hitting markets anytime soon.

OnePlus said in a February posting on the OnePlus Community forum that it had “decided not to release a foldable” in 2025 and that its sister company, Oppo, was now “taking the lead in the foldable segment” with the Oppo Find N5. OnePlus Open was a rebranded version of Find N5.

OnePlus said that it is not a step back, it’s a recalibration. In an interview with TechRadar, Xu said โ€œIn the foldable industry, the common challenge for every smartphone maker is [working out] how to make the phone slimmer, lighter, and the crease less visible, while also, at the same time, not sacrificing other key specs when you are trying to solve those challenges,โ€

“Our goal at OnePlus is to give the customer the greatest experience possible. To be honest, if you look back at the OnePlus Open, its features are still quite competitive now. It has more to do with time. We are considering how we might better address those [aforementioned] issues. We chose not to release a foldable this year for that reason”.

It looks like OnePlus’s desire is to bring a meaningful smartphone rather than just a successor. People might think the foldable smartphone is disappearing, but it is not like that. Xu said that “I can also provide a number [that will support our conclusion]. According to the most recent Counterpoint study, foldable shipments grew 2.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, less than anticipated. The market for foldables is undoubtedly growing, but it will take some time before they truly, let’s say, transcend the divide and become a product that most people can afford.

We can understand that the foldable market is growing, but it isn’t yet large enough to make frequent product releases profitable, at least not for OnePlus. On the Other hand, Samsung is gearing up for its next foldable, which will be released soon in the coming months.

Fortunately, the OnePlus Open 2 is more than just a fantasy. In its previously stated statement, OnePlus clarified that it is not completely exiting the foldable market: “Our decision to pause on foldables for this generation does not signify a departure from the category,” the company said. Furthermore, because a new model is not anticipated in 2025, it is reasonable to presume that the OnePlus Open 2 will not just be a rebranded Oppo Find N5 when it does ultimately come.
