The South Korean giant Samsung Electronics will be the supplier for the foldable iPhone. The display-making unit under Samsung will be supplying OLED displays for Apple’s first foldable which might release next year but this is just a speculation.
According to reports, Apple has picked Samsung Display as the sole provider for foldable iPhones. As for now, Samsung estimates that it will provide more than 15 million OLED displays to Apple annually. Intially it was around 9 million units but looks like Apple is looking for massive manufacturing.
According to reports, the Korean display manufacturer defeated China’s BOE and crosstown competitor LG Display Co., all of which were reportedly serious candidates to split Apple’s initial orders for foldable OLED screens.
The foldable iPhone supplier will be only Samsung
According to industry analysts, Samsung Display’s unparalleled leadership in foldable OLED technology, which comes from its vast experience as Samsung Electronics’ flexible screen provider, is the reason for the global smartphone leader’s choice.
Since the Korean tech giant began selling the first foldable smartphones in the world in 2019, the Korean display manufacturer has been providing folding screens for Samsung Electronics’ foldable Galaxy series.
Rumors around the foldable iPhone
It is anticipated that Apple’s first foldable iPhone would have a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch main display when unfurled, which is comparable to the iPad mini’s screen size.
Shipments of foldable smartphones increased 2.9% in 2024 compared to 2023. The market of foldable smartphones is undoubtedly growing but on the other hand, the growth is slow because the phones are too costly for customers to buy.
The largest obstacle to the market expansion for foldable smartphones is thought to be their high cost. Even if Apple launches a foldable, the price will be higher than the Pro Max model of any iPhone. But once Apple launches the foldable smartphone the rise of foldable market will increase especially in US.
Samsung Display’s share of the worldwide foldable panel market is expected to rise to 70% in 2026 after falling below 50% in 2024, under the expected rise in demand for foldable smartphones. Other Chinese smartphones have taken share from Samsung.
