Meta has been losing money because of virtual reality headsets, but now this might change because Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently showcased new Meta AR glasses, also called Orion Glasses, which weigh around 100g and are see-through glasses.

Mark Zuckerberg did showcase the new glasses, but they are not going to release anytime soon; it might take a few years. But according to Zuckerberg, the demo shows a new direction for thin, feature-rich, see-through smart glassesโ€””a glimpse of the future” and “the dream of Reality Labs.”

Meta AR Glasses: Design and Build

We recently saw the Apple Vison Pro, which was bulky and wired, but Meta CEO showcased the glasses and said that “they have to be glasses.” That means no wires, no bulky headset, and a weight of less than 100 g. Mark Zuckerberg also launched Meta Quest 3, which weighs around 515 grams, and the Apple Vision Pro weighs between 600 and 650 grams.

Even though the lightweight glasses use “custom silicon” and a tiny battery, Zuckerberg acknowledged that part of the processing is done in a “small puck” that links wirelessly to the spectacles.

Zuckerberg said to achieve true augmented reality, the Meta AR Glasses Orion uses a screen that “is not actually a screen.” Instead, light is directed into waveguides that are specifically made by small projectors that are included in the arms of the glasses. After that, light strikes “nanoscale 3D structures etched into the lenses” to produce holographic pictures that may be superimposed on top of a realistic image of the outside world as viewed via clear lenses at different depths and sizes.

Waveguides in the lenses allow the Micro LED projectors at the frame of the Meta Orion to beam all of the material. This particular display uses neither plastic nor glass; thus, it’s not really a display. Rather, silicon carbide is used in its construction. The Meta AR Glasses Orion employ seven cameras to realize the goal of holographic augmented reality.

According to Zuckerberg, ensuring that the photos are bright enough to be viewed in a variety of lighting situations and crisp enough to catch minute details has been difficult. Orion microprojection technology has a better and largest field of view, and it reaches 70 degrees, which is highest in the small AR glasses, and the field of view is greater than Microsoft’s older Hololens 2.

The Meta Orion most notably uses a wireless compute pack for power and goes fully wireless. Furthermore, a neural wristbandโ€”yes, it looks a lot like the Vision Proโ€”allows you to utilize pinch motions. But that’s not the only gestureโ€”hand and eye tracking together allow Meta Orion to be fully utilized.

Launch Date and Time

“One of the most polished product prototypes we’ve ever developed and is truly representative of something that could ship to consumers,” claims Meta in a blog post about Orion. The prototype currently costs around $10,000, which is not user-friendly. The prototype for now costs more, so it’s not going to release anytime soon; there are rumors that it might release in the year 2027.
