Windows 11 Recall Feature

When the Microsoft Recall AI tool’s initial preview was made public, numerous users expressed disapproval due to privacy and security concerns. Microsoft has finally made it accessible, but only Copilot Plus PCs may use it.

The new Recall AI tool is available for installation for Windows Insiders users. As I said, Copilot PCs may now use the new Recall AI capability. However, there is a catch: only Copilot PCs with Qualcomm processors will be able to use it; PCs with AMD or Intel processors will not be able to but it will come in 2025 (Expected).

The first question that might arise to some users is: What is Microsoft Recall AI? Well, in simple words, it takes screenshots of almost everything on a PC, and it stores the data, and you can search, recall, and retrace your work. Users need to enable recall and search in recall app and you can see what were you doing previously using natural language queries. The best thing is you get a scrollable timeline so it is easy to skip to specific date and find the websites that you were working on. AI is used in Recall’s search results to match text and images from screenshots.

Security experts showed how easy someone could take recalls recorded on a Windows computer and access that data, which was kept on a target device without encryption, which is why Microsoft postponed the implementation of Recall, which was initially announced in May.

After this Microsoft said that this is Opt in feature so it will give users choice whether or not they like to opt in or not. According to Microsoft, you may quickly remove photos and manage which ones are kept. Additionally, the business permits websites and applications to be excluded from Recall.

Additionally, Recall automatically recognizes and does not preserve images of sensitive data, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and personal identification numbers.

According to the Microsoft corporation, no Recall snapshots will be accessible to it, and neither will they be stored in the cloud or utilized to train Microsoft’s artificial intelligence models. Microsoft’s Windows Insider team states, “We don’t send your PC snapshots to Microsoft or third parties, and we don’t use them for training purposes.” “We cannot restore your snapshots if you remove Windows Hello or if you need to reset your computer or move to a new computer because Microsoft cannot access the keys to view your encrypted data.”

To use recall, Windows Hello is a necessary feature that will confirm your presence, and users can then access the feature. One important thing is that it requires bitlocker and secure boot both, and it should be available on Copilot PCs.

In the meanwhile, Recall’s Click to Do feature is made to identify text and pictures in Recall snapshots so you can do AI-powered actions on them, such as copying text or storing photos from previous snapshots.
