Last year, Sony launched its new earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 Earbuds, in India, which are the successors to the Sony WF-1000XM4. The predecessor earbuds had some cons, but they were still impressive. The WF-1000XM4 was released in 2021, and everyone was waiting for new-generation earbuds, but it took nearly two years to launch the next product. Previous earbuds had some cons, so let’s see if the new one has improved or not. Read the full review.

Sony WF-1000XM5 Earbuds: Designย

This time Sony did a good job regarding weight, from previous gen it is lighter and fits perfectly in my ears and also its smaller than WF-1000XM4.

The WF-1000XM4 was slightly bigger and sometimes popped out of the ear; this is not an issue with new-gen earbuds. This set of earbuds has polyurethane foam tips instead of silicone ones, which fit the shape of your ear canals and offer superior passive noise isolation. It is so much superior to active noise cancellation (ANC), which is available at a variety of price points, from midrange to inexpensive earbuds. In the event that these default tips aren’t the best fit for you, three other pairs of tips are included. Check which one is right for you.

The build quality is great; it has a glossy finish on the outside and a matte finish on the back of the buds. The case has USB-C charging, which is good, and also has a led that shows the charging status.

To keep things green, the outside package is almost plastic-free, while the earbuds and case are purportedly constructed from a variety of recycled plastic components.

Specifications:

A bigger 8.4 mm dynamic driver and three microphonesโ€”two for ANC and one for callingโ€”are housed in each earphone. You also got two processors now instead of just one. Sony’s latest V2 processor manages sound processing, while a separate QN2e chip is responsible for ANC. With all that circuitry, each bud should weigh no more than 6 grams, yet without sacrificing the battery backup.

SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codecs are supported by the Sony WF-1000XM5 over Bluetooth 5.3. You select a codec based on your preference for either reliable connectivity or high-quality audio. It is recommended to use LDAC codecs and choose the former when the source device and the buds are in the same room. These earphones can be paired with two devices at once and offer dual-pairing. Dual pairing is a very good feature that not all earbuds have.

A lot of gestures are also available; wear detection sensors are included, which cause the music to pause when you take the bud out of your ear and resume when you put it back in. Touch-enabled on the back of the earphones, you may use single, double, and triple tap gestures to accomplish a few different functions. These earbuds have an IPX4 rating for sweat/water resistance and can be worn during workouts or exercise.

Performance:

Overall the sound is good, the wireless connection is stable and works well within 10 meters. With Bluetooth 5.3 support you wont see any latency issues while playing games or consuming media.ย  Sony WF-1000XM5 with ANCย has three modes, firstly noise cancellation which works fine. Second, Ambient sounds and lastly Normal mode, in this all other modes are off.

With ANC turn ON it further cuts outside noise like people chattering around you. The base is also impressive you can literally hear backgrounds sounds clearly in songs, which gives immersive experience. Overall its a good product and you will not face any issue. Call quality is decent you will not face any lag and the the other person on phone is also Cleary audible.

Battery life:

Similar to the XM4, Sony promises an 8-hour battery backup for the buds when ANC is on and a 24-hour battery backup when the charging case is used. I was able to get slightly more than six hours of use out of the buds with ANC turned on constantly during my tests with the LDAC codec. These buds can be fully recharged twice more by the case, bringing the total battery backup time to almost eighteen hours.

Verdict:

If you have a lot of money, you can buy it, as it costs around Rs 24,990. Many people may think of Air Pods at this price, but if you are a fan of Sony, then nobody can stop you from buying them, and I can say that clearly you won’t be disappointed after buying them.
